Radix BioSolutions Invited To Demonstrate the Power of Botulinum Toxin Multiplex Assay Panel

August 19-21, 2009

Radix BioSolutions Vice President of Research and Development Venkat Venkateswaran was honored to join a panel of researchers from academia, government agencies and the private sector invited to present at this year’s Symposium and Workshop hosted by the Botulinum Research Center (BRC) at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This year’s workshop focusing on the “Current Trends in Botulinum Toxin Detection” was held August 19-20 at Center’s state-of-the-art research building located at the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth. Through a series of workshops, seminars and presentations, researchers explored innovative ways to more effectively detect botulinum neurotoxins, which have potential to be used as biothreat agents.

Dr. Neeraja Venkateswaran, Research Scientist at Radix BioSolutions, gave a talk on “Fluorescent microsphere Array Multiplex botulinum toxin assay”. Other presenters in the workshop included experts from US Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Security & Applied Nutrition, Centers for Disease Control, and New York State Department of Health. Modern botulinum detection methods were demonstrated to the workshop participants. Drs. Venkat Venkateswaran and Neeraja Venkateswaran performed a practical demonstration of multiplex detection of Botulinum toxin A,B,E&F using xMAP® technology using BioPlex Suspension Array System.

In addition to being one of the organizers of the symposium’s workshop which brings together leading minds in the field of toxin detection and defense, Dr. Venkat Venkateswaran also gave a presentation on “Fit-for-purpose botulinum assays” in the main Symposium on August 21, 2009.

“Understanding how botulinum toxins work, their applications and potential threats, is critical to developing defenses against them” explains Dr. Venkateswaran. “Radix BioSolutions is excited by the collaborative research to innovate the ways to detect these toxins with greater speed, accuracy and cost-efficiencies” Part of the research work was carried out by a Contract awarded to Radix Biosolutions in collaboration with Tetracore (Rockville, MD), Botulinum Research Center, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Dartmouth, MA), and Naval Research Laboratory (Washington, DC) by, United States Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate.
